Rightio, trying to get my E30 back on the road VERY quickly. Longer term fix my RWD SR20 and install all the good bits and go. In the meantime I have come across a cheap FWD SR20DET out of an Avenir locally.
I have found a bunch of info out like Bellhousing pattern being different, starter mounts are different as well as all the usual 'WHY Bother', 'Just get a RWD engine' post.
I want to know if I will have a problem bolting up my RWD oil take off plate, RWD Water Thermostat / Outlet setup, RWD Sump, RWD Flywheel or RWD Head.
Here is a picture of an SR gearbox modified for FWD Engine block fitment. As I have a Z32 Gearbox conversion I am confident I can drill a new hole in the adapter plate fairly easily to get around this. And as the starter bolts to the adapter plate I believe this will also take care of the issues with the starter.
You can also see the oil take off plate / filter arrangement is different, but it also appears to bolt on in a similar fashion. Apparently the only drama with RWD heads is after they brought in S14's there is an extra hole for draining. As I have an S13 engine this is a non-issue.
My Major concern is whether or not I will be able to fit the RWD sump setup, I'm guessing the pickup for the oil pump will be different, but I have spares.
From what I can tell the mounting lugs for the RWD Engine Mount arms are there.
A run down of what I want to do.
Buy FWD Engine,
Fit RWD Sump, Head, Flywheel and adapter plate.
RWD Engine Mounts, Oil Take Off, Water Outlet setup.
The Manifolds should bolt up to the head fine.
Any Problems? Yes I have posted on NS, and have already received the 'Just Buy a RWD' answer. I Believe I have enough bits to make it RWD, I want to know if it is possible.
FWD starter bolts through the block and trans, the RWD one just bolts to the transmission. Most of the motor mount bolt holes on the RWD are present on the FWD ( not AWD) block. Most of the Bellhousing bolts line up. FWD distributor will not clear the firewall. RWD S14 block/head has extra oil hole where FWD does not. You will have to get a RWD KA. Even though the poeple have done a FWD converted to RWD KA, its more troble than its worth and converting the 280zx chassi to FWD isn't going to be any easier. If you are thinking of graphting an Altima front suspension, you will have to get custom half shafts to shorten up the wheel base.
