Aftergoing online found thatwhat I referred to as a 12 point torx bit is actually called a foursquare bit or a “serrated wrench”Napa has these under part no SER2306 (12mm serrated wrench) and it wasless than $8.00.Also, no need to remove the exhaust. Simply loosen the clamps and undothe 2 hangers.

Was able to slidethe shaft out through the front past the transmission by pulling downon the exhaust which gave me just enough clearance.About 3 hours if you haven’t done it before.Sending the core back tomorrow.Regards,Bill D.HoustonVlad,Just wanted to express my thanks for warranty replacement of the drive shaft on my Touareg. The new driveline completely remedied the slight vibration I have been experiencing Especially as it wasn’t obvious the shaft was causing the issue. Thanks for taking care of me as a customer and offering the “No questions asked” replacement.

Car will roll when shaft isremoved.

Wear safety glasses to prevent road dirt from getting you in theeyes. The car may also need to be moved forward to access upper bolts onshaft, so be prepared to move car a foot between unbolting shaft.Let your buyers know that they need a special tool to remove the aftbolts from the drive shaft. Its called a Triple Square and its 12mm.

NAPAhas a kit that includes 8mm, 10, 12 and 14 for about 8 dollars, but itsjust the driver. Germans makers like the triple square so it will come inhandy for other car repairs.

They can use a 1/2 or 13mm wrench to turnthe 12mm 3square or put it on a ratchet if your car has clearance, whichmine did not (2004 V-10 Touareg). You will also need a 13mm socket, small hammer, a 6 inch extension, an18mm socket, and an 18mm open end wrench.Remove 6 rear triple square 12mm from rear of shaft. Remove the (3) 18mmnuts and bolts from front of shaft and I recommend removing the (3) 18mmbolts to the flex plate that connects to the transmission too as theclearance is tight. You may have to move car to get to the upper bolts.Remove 13mm bolts to metal cover plate and bolts to the center drive shaftsupport. Now, prop exhaust first to support exhaust, loosen the exhaust clamps andtap forward with small hammer, remove center, passenger, then driverhanger bolts. Wiggle the shaft to remove the flex disk and lower exhaustto gently bump shaft forward to allow rear shaft to free fromdifferential.

Remove shaft and loosely bolt front exhaust hangers forsupport.IF you have all the tools ready to go, the removal should take less than30 minutes. Thanks,BradDear Colorado Drive shaftI would like to thank you for the awesome service I received from you ordering the drive shaft for my Touareg! When I called you where very responsive and the immediate airfreight shipping the same day allowed me to install the shaft directly the next day and had the car up running. The shaft is absolutely well reconditioned. It runs absolutely flawless and balanced. I have already done 2000mls+ with the shaft and everything is perfect. The refund and the preparation for resending the shaft was as well perfectly organized ( UPS card filled out and prepaid). If VW had a service like you have!

Unfortunately they do not have and I had made bad experience here in the US.

Failure Date: Driving along in a residential neighborhood under slight acceleration and a loud thumping noise begins in the transmission hump under the armrest - felt like something heavy had become wrapped around the driveshaft and was causing intense vibration above 30mph. Park the car and tow to repair shop and learn the drive shaft had broken and required complete replacement. This is a vehicle that has never been offroad and vast majority of miles are commuting on the freeway and general around-town driving.

No way should a well-maintained vehicle doing light highway driving suffer a driveshaft failure at only 105k miles. Clearly a defect that the manufacturer should be responsible for. Repair bill was approximately $1600.See.

Failure Date: While accelerating onto the highway, a loud, repetitious bang/clunk from the middle underside of the vehicle started, sounding similar to a blown tire. No abnormal operations noted prior to this. Limped the car back to the shop at 15 mph and found the center driveshaft carrier bearing failed. The service tech acted as if this was common and was not surprised.

I have a 1981 Mercury with over 305000 miles and never lost a bearing in my driveshaft. Mechanical parts fail. The worst part of this event is voa's reaction that somehow they are not responsible for a poor/weak design.

List of other major component failures with no recall that are common to all Touaregs of this generation according to the company's own service techs:center differential lock motor failrear diff. Lock motor failcooling fans do not shut off, drain batterythermostat housing leakradio failure. Failure Date: At 41000, the car started making a high pitch noise whenever driving. After getting a second opinion, it is determined that the bearing on the center drive shaft has failed. Called vw and confirmed the problem and that this part is not serviceable. The whole drive shaft (and a new coupler/flex disc) needs to be replaced. Vw genuine parts cost $1095 on the drive shaft and $270 for the coupler; labor is set to 3 hours.

Searched the internet and is indeed a common problem for vw touregs v6/v8 and also cayennes. I hope vw makes this a recall as it makes an uncomfortable ride and could be a safety issue if not replaced in time.See. Failure Date: I noticed a small vibration coming from the bottom around the middle of the vehicle. When I took it to a mechanic I was told that the hanger bearing and that the hanger bearing is not an available part hat the entire driveshaft needs to be replaced for $1,400.! The car is only two weeks out of warranty with only 51,000 miles so I took it to volkswagon.

Volkswagon said that they will not fix it under warranty because I am two weeks out but, if I had been a loyal customer, meaning if I had all my service done by vw they would hav covered it! So in other words they don't stand by there product unless you get your oil changed by them! Anyway after doing extensive research on this problem on volkswagon forums it seems that this problem is very common on the vehicles and it happens at low mileage.

I also found out that the part is available to replace and that the entire driveshaft does not need to be replaced! What kind of company does not stand by there product, especially since it seems to be common.See. Failure Date: The contact owns a 2005 Volkswagen Touareg. While driving at 35 mph, the contact heard an unusual rattling noise.

The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealership where a defect was found in the driveshaft. The contact called the manufacturer who confirmed their knowledge of the failure but would provide no assistance. The vehicle was repaired at the contacts expense.

In addition, the transmission valves were defective. The vehicle was currently at the dealership awaiting repairs.

The current and failure mileages were approximately 70,000. Failure Date: Car: 2004 Volkswagen Touareg v6 SUV 38,900milesproblem: car frequently jerks while slowing down (at speeds between 20-40mph). Was told drive shaft was damaged and needed to be replaced at a cost of $1,150 parts plus labor of approx.

$1,000 which included computer diagnostic. Upon pick up from mechanic problem still persisted so I took the car back to mechanic. I was told that damaged drive shaft damaged 2 valves in the transmission which now also need replacing at a cost of $1600. I was also told by the mechanic that they had received a 'bulletin' on the car regarding similar complaints about this problem from several owners. This car only has 39,000 miles and is driven with care.

It seems extremely premature to have anything of this nature happen especially at a cost of almost $4000 out of pocket to me and other owners. I ask that you please look into Volkswagen's responsibility in correction/reimbursement (possible recall) of this situation. Failure Date: 2004 vw Touareg with tire failure and key programming.

Consumer states he had to replace the tires due to a puncture in one of the sidewall tires. The second key received needed to be programmed and dealer charged him for programming. The consumer stated he gets low gas mileage. When the vehicle was returned to the consumer, the tire monitoring system would come on and go off repeatedly.
